Across the United States, countless idle agricultural silos offer a unique opportunity for adaptive reuse. The Star Gardens concept elevates the abandoned grain silo from a banal agrarian tube into a sensory architectural folly, redefining an overlooked utilitarian typology into a celestial device for stargazing. By reconditioning the inherent awkwardness of these hollow, site-less cylinders, the project liberates the structures from their single-function history and transforms their interior volumes into experiential, light-filled, contemplative volumes. Topped with hemispherical domes perforated by 1,800 precise oculi that calibrate sixteen distinct constellation patterns, these numerous apertures flood the hollow interior with a shifting, kaleidoscopic array of natural sunlight during the day.
