The ranch house succeeded in doing what previous residential types most often intentionally avoided with their compositional tendencies for symmetry, frontality, and contextualization: by contrast, the ranch house’s disturbed legibility of elements through the seemingly independent consideration of parts within the whole of a façade. These elements and compositional logics center on location of the front door, the roof-to-wall relationship, window scales, and compaction of the vertical dimension. For this proposal, techniques of “composite averaging” were used to create recombinant, hybrid expressions for the ranch house type.
