For the Air Force Village Interfaith Chapel eightyeight-west with Endemic developed a radial organization centralizing the communal Nave space at the nexus of three programmatic arms that are geometrically linked into a cohesive whole. The three outstretched arms house the programmatic needs yet appear to undulate above the ground from the exterior. Each arm adapts to the scale of the surrounding context before ascending vertically and culminating high above the Nave with a glass ceiling visually connecting the space below with the sky above. The radial plan further adds economy to the design and construction logics whereby efficiency is achieved via repetition of parts and labor in the construction process. The radial plan allows for natural cross ventilation as cooling strategy in the arid San Antonio climate while also promoting a healthy indoor air quality. Structural glulam beams articulate the interconnected geometry of the chapel while an undulating wall peels from two of the arms interior surfaces to become the backdrop at the alter. Low-E glazing and wood veneer, opposed to solid wood, at the interior add to the environmental considerations of the interfaith chapel. The low-E glazing at the ground level is arranged in a saw tooth pattern, alternating between glass and opaque metal panels in order to provide intimacy to the interior. The exterior shell of the chapel is comprised of matte white panels which appear as a dynamic whole as they reflect the temporal hues and tones of natural light offered by the San Antonio skies as well as minimizes heat gain during the summer months. The architecture of the AFV Interfaith Chapel maintains a critical awareness of the environment and community of which it is intimately connected to and strives to embolden the local spirit of the Air Force Village while symbolically extending beyond the purely local as an iconic beacon.
