Endemic was asked to develop the skin design for 2 hotels as part of a comprehensive project in Changzhou Taihu Lake Bay, China being designed by OUTR with local Chinese architects office, ICDA. The footprint was inherited but the elevation could be subtly changed with the skin. The skin operates as two series of graded slats that appear to oscillate across and through eachother. Each family of slats indexes an invisbile parent surface which they contour to generate the skin. The increment of contour varies between the two families as does thier orientation, maintaing sublte differences in the plan angle orientation. The first family occupies the top and bottom thirds (1/3) while the second family spans the entire vertical dimension (approx. 25m). The combination of the two, while providing the exterior visual effects, allows for private interiors with plenty of light in and views out. Additionally, the intention was to de-emphasize the individual rooms imprint on the facade, save for lighting at night, in favor of a continuous reading of the skin across the hotel volumes.
