Borrowing from traditional vineyard typologies, the residence is composed of five linear, interconnected volumes unified by an expansive wraparound porch and a central breezeway designed for effortless indoor-outdoor living.The open, light-filled interior is organized as an interconnected series of large rooms and intimate nooks that deliberately frame valley views as you move through the space. A semi-detached guest suite and home office anchors the home to the southern uphill slope, while the northern side cascades down to a terraced walkout basement with a game room and custom wine &amp; root cellar. The home's defining feature is its collection of five unique, sculptural chimneys that cut a rhythmic silhouette against the&nbsp; sky to mark the edges of each architectural volume. While the home features no traditional fireplaces, these chimneys are highly functional passive ventilation and fresh air intakes; they cleverly conceal all plumbing stacks and mechanical exhausts to keep the black metal roof entirely free of penetrations. Operating completely independent of the grid, the house utilizes a sophisticated combination of solar, geothermal, and wind energy sources, paired with a reverse osmosis water system, radiant heating, and non-mechanically ducted passive cooling strategies. Furthermore, because the estate is located within a Wildland-Urban Interface fire zone, the entire project integrates rigorous fire mitigation strategies directly into its resilient material selections, specialized structural assemblies, site layout, and smart ventilation design. This environmental friction, compounded by a kinking sewer easement, directly shapes the home’s layout through a rhythmic interplay of organizational loops, organic curves, and sharp orthogonal angles. The architectural exploration began with abstract site paintings that mapped the site's contrasting boundaries, translating the creek's curvilinear edges into a structural language that balances city constraints with the natural landscape. On the exterior, the front porch is defined by intersecting, smooth-troweled stucco barrel vaults, while the upper facade features locally crafted, custom-ribbed tiles. The main residence is a spacious six-bedroom, 6.5-bath home organized around a central three-story courtyard wrapped in rock walls and lush vegetation. This open-air void draws natural light deep into the home and terminates at the basement level with a tranquil shallow pond and a cascading rock waterfall. The main floor features large patio doors that open to a resort-style swimming pool, effortlessly merging indoor and outdoor living spaces. Below ground, a full basement serves as an entertainment hub complete with a game room, a home theater, and a sophisticated lounge bar. This painting was then combined with a site survey and the combination of the painting and survey were used to inform preliminary architectural moves aimed at&nbsp; integrating the site and house into a cohesive yet unique design. Combining a main house, a guest house, and integrated barns, the design serves a dedicated equestrian family by seamlessly blending everyday domestic life with horse-care operations. The exterior utilizes black charred wood siding to establish a sharp, artistic contrast against the shifting backdrop of winter snow and summer greenery, heightening the presence of both the building and the surrounding landscape. By reinterpreting familiar rural elements like the front porch, the chimney, and the gambrel roof, the architecture intentionally shifts expected spatial and contextual associations. Inside, the home challenges the hyper-exposed nature of contemporary open-plan layouts by creating dedicated spaces for complex human emotions. Alongside custom elements like the Angler Stool, the design features intimate, plush faux-fur nooks that offer quiet, protected sanctuaries for reading, resting, or reflection. Septic Design: CalState Engineering Status: Unbuilt The Country House, located on a rural hillside south of Ione, California, is a 3,000-square-foot, two-story residential commissioned proposal designed for a 1.5-acre site overlooking a pristine nature preserve. The project explores the concept of the "purlieu"—a historic term for landscapes that sit somewhere between fully cultivated farmland and completely wild terrain. This thematic focus guides the playful manipulation of conventional architectural elements like the porch, roof, and chimney to heighten the connection between the structure and its natural surroundings. The defining feature of the home is a wrap-through porch conceived as a dramatic, subtractive void carved completely through the ground floor. This central carve bridges the northern and southern outdoor terraces, handles the main entryways,&nbsp; and allows the surrounding landscape to visually&nbsp; flow&nbsp; through the center of the home. Positioned precisely where the home bends to reorient toward the nature preserve, this clever shift also aligns the lower-level garage with the public street for seamless vehicle access while keeping the guest suite private. Rising through the core of the house, a sculptural central chimney functions as a high-volume ventilation shaft, using a whole-house fan to pull fresh air upward and passively cool both floors without the need for extensive mechanical ductwork.
